Colour Light

This unique therapy was created in the 1950s in Camphill Aberdeen for children with a variety of special needs. It has been further developed over many decades in SEND schools worldwide and at the Sheiling. We have a purpose-built room for this therapy.

Colour, eurythmy movements, music and speech are all woven together to create a therapeutic immersion.

Natural light streams through coloured panels onto a room-wide screen. Blinds are used to alter the colour display. The onlooker will see the practitioner moving rhythmically behind the screen, thereby creating coloured shadows. This is synchronised with music and spoken verse, or in silence.

This therapy endeavours to give an environment of peace, beauty, trust and acceptance. It has been shown to help with:

  • calming feelings of anxiety and emotional stress, and experiencing peace and relaxation
  • breathing more freely and deeper
  • addressing overstimulated senses in a calm and harmonising way
  • generate engagement and attention

This gentle therapy can also be helpful for students to prepare emotionally for other therapies.

Individual and group programmes are created by a small team, who prepare the sessions according to the needs of the students. They are invited to come for a series of weekly sessions which last approximately 15 minutes per session.
