We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young adults and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  All posts involving direct contact with vulnerable children and adults are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemptions) Order 1975 (2013 & 2020) provided that certain spent convictions and cautions are ‘protected’.  These are not subject to disclosure to employers and cannot be taken into account.  Guidance and criteria on the filtering of these cautions and convictions can be found on the Ministry of Justice website: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dbs-filtering-guidance/dbs-filtering-guide.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide details of all unspent convictions and those that would not be filtered, prior to the date of the interview. You may be asked for further information about your criminal history during the recruitment process.  If your application is successful, this self-disclosure information will be checked against information from the Disclosure & Barring Service before your appointment is confirmed. 

We will also carry out an online search for all shortlisted candidates.  This check will be part of a safeguarding check, and the search will purely be based on whether an individual is suitable to work with children. As care must be taken to avoid unconscious bias and any risk of discrimination, a person who will not be on the appointment panel will conduct the search and will only share information if and when findings are relevant and of concern.
